This beginners' textbook in theology, never finished bySt. Thomas Aquinas, sets out to summarize the entirety ofsacred theology. Used as the primary teacher of sacredtheology in seminaries for centuries, it had the uniqueprivilege of being kept open on the altar during the Councilof Trent, so that the fathers of the Council could alwaysand immediately draw from its wisdom, the only book besidesthe Sacred Scriptures themselves accorded this honor. Thegreat Leo XIII, of happy memory, stated in his encyclicalAeterni Patris that St. Thomas Aquinas should be thebasis for any Catholic philosophical and theologicaleducation, and this is the greatest of St. Thomas's works.Its value cannot be overstated.
