Amongst collectors of post-punk era cassettes, Solid Space's sole album, 1982's Space Museum, has long been a sought-after item. While scarce and hard to find, the demand is largely down to the music contained within.

Solid Space was a short-lived British minimal wave band, formed in 1980 by Matthew 'Maf' Vosburgh and Dan Goldstein. Vosburgh and Goldstein, who met at age 11, were previously involved in 1970s new wave band Exhibit A and formed a record label, Irrelevant Wombat Records, at age 14.[1] The band's music and lyrics were heavily indebted to science fiction, in particular the television series Doctor Who.

The band spent the next couple of years after their formation recording,[1] with contributions from Jonathan 'Jon Winegum' Weinreich.[2] The band's only release that featured all of their material, titled Space Museum, was released on cassette in 1982 through In Phaze Records. Following its release, Solid Space disbanded and their members drifted into obscurity.[3]

Despite staying underground, the band was influential in the development of minimal wave and other related electronic music genres, influencing acts such as In Trance 95.[4]

Following the dissolution of the band, Dan Goldstein pursued a career in journalism, which included a stint as editor of Maplin's Electronics & Music Maker magazine, whilst Maf Vosburgh studied photography and become a photographer for music magazines, before later moving on to work as a software engineer for Apple and Google. Both members are currently based in the United States. In 2017, under the supervision and approval of Solid Space, Space Museum was remastered onto vinyl by indie label Dark Entries.

Space Museum is the sole studio album by British minimal wave band Solid Space. It was released in 1982 by In Phaze Records through cassette, eventually becoming a rarity.[1] It was produced by the record label's owner Pat Bermingham.[2]

The album's sound has been described as 'cold, disconnected, minimal synth-pop full of eerie moods and bizarre melodies.' It features lyrics inspired by science fiction novels and television programs, in particular the popular shows Doctor Who and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, and often deal with traveling through the galaxy, 'delivered in a robotic deadpan vocals.'[1] Tracks such as 'A Darkness In My Soul' (inspired by the Dean Koontz novel of the same name), 'Destination Moon' (based on The Adventures of Tintin novel of the same name), and 'Tenth Planet' were also considered as 'dark, atmospheric and atypical', because they feature guitar along with synthesizers and drum machines.[3]

The album was named number 2 on Fact magazine's list of 'The 20 best Minimal Wave records ever made'.[3] The cover art is taken from a publicity still from the Doctor Who serial 'The Wheel in Space'. Two song titles on the album, also reference Doctor Who serials: 'The Tenth Planet' and 'Earthshock', which like 'The Wheel in Space', also feature the Cybermen.

On December 10, 2017, a remastered version of Space Museum was released by the label Dark Entries [4]. It is the first legitimate reissue of the album on vinyl, having been supervised and approved by the members of Solid Space, and was designed to curb the amount of bootleg copies that have circulated since its release. The LP expands the original tracklisting to feature two bonus tracks - a cover of 'Tutti Lo Sonno' by Marine Girls, and 'Platform 6' by the band's original incarnation, Exhibit A - plus a 11x11 double sided insert with lyrics, notes, and never-seen-before photographs of the group, as well as a postcard replica of the album's original advert.
