If you do not plan to use a controller, this step can be skipped. Choose which controller you plan on using with Silent Hill 2 PC by selecting the appropriate tab below. It is assumed you already have the necessary Windows drivers installed for your controller (which is typically done for you automatically by Windows when you first connect the controller to your PC and let Windows auto-search for the necessary drivers online).

Xbox Controllers

Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition plays best with official Xbox (XInput-based) controllers. Following the steps below, Xbox controllers have 100% plug-and-play functionality.

Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams is an updated version of the original Silent Hill 2 released one year after the original version. It has an extra scenario where you can play as Maria, explaining her backstory, an extra ending and some new items. Welcome to the PlayStation 2 Vault. This Vault contains a perfect copy of every PlayStation 2 game released in the US, verified by Redump.To play them you'll need an emulator from the Emulation Lair. All games are in.7z format and can be opened with the free tool 7-Zip.

Playtested with: Xbox 360 controller (wired), Xbox 360 controller (wireless via official 2.4GHz receiver), Xbox One controller (wireless via official USB dongle).

1. Download XInput Plus.
2. Unzip the download package and copy the contents of the Silent Hill 2 folder from the download to <path-to-game>Silent Hill 2.
3. Connect your Xbox 360 or Xbox One controller to your PC and launch the game.
4. Assign or remove functions to your controller's inputs in the game's Control Options menu.

2. Using your keyboard, navigate to the Joypad column, choose a specific function you wish to assign to your controller, and press Enter.
3. Press an input on your controller to assign the input to the function.
• You can clear a controller input for a function by pressing Enter on the desired function under the Joypad column, then pressing Escape on your keyboard to clear out the input.
4. Repeat this process for all game functions you wish to map to a controller.

For your convenience, the diagram below shows the default console controller layout for Silent Hill 2 displayed on an Xbox One controller. The diagram also includes two suggested button actions not available to the original console releases: Left joystick press for quick heal and right joystick press for quick reload.

Silent Hill 2 PC binds the movement of the 'search' camera to the character movement pad (left joystick and/or D-pad). This means you must fully stop moving your character to look around in search view. This is hard-coded into the PC version of the game and cannot be changed.

Your controller must be connected to your PC prior to launching the game, otherwise the game won't detect the controller.

Generic PC Gamepads

There are many types of generic PC gamepads out on the market, all with different features and functions. Because of how many choices are out there, it would be impossible to play test them all. Full input functionality is not guaranteed when using a generic PC gamepad for Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition.

Choose which API (XInput or DirectInput) your gamepad uses by selecting the appropriate tab below. If you are unsure what API your gamepad uses, refer to the controller's manual or manufacturer's specifications on their website.

It is not recommended to play Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition with a DualShock (PlayStation) controller. Specialized software and drivers that must be launched before play are required for DualShock 2 and DualShock 3 controllers to work with Windows. And while the DualShock 4 can be used as a plug-and-play controller that is detected as a DirectInput gamepad, vibration is not inherently supported through the DualShock 4 with this game.

Playtested with: DualShock 4 controller (wired).

DualShock 4 Controller (plug-and-play method)

1. Note:The DualShock 4 controller will not rumble with this game when used as a simple plug-and-play device.

Silent Hill 2 is a third-person survival horror video game.
While set in the series' eponymous fictional American town, Silent Hill 2 is not a direct sequel to the first Silent Hill game. Instead, it centers on James Sunderland, who enters the town after receiving a letter apparently written by his deceased wife, saying she is waiting for him in Silent Hill. Joined by Maria, who strongly resembles her, he searches for her and discovers the truth about her death. Additional material in rereleases and ports included Born from a Wish, which focuses on Maria before she and James meet.
